Post-traumatic stress disorder is a severe disorder that develops from exposure to a trauma – a terrifying, highly unsafe situation in which there was a threat of death to oneself or a loved one. PTSD is the lasting consequence of living through such an ordeal.
Everyone handles trauma in a different manner, which means that not every individual who experiences a deeply traumatic event will develop PTSD. Factors that can increase the likelihood of developing this disorder include:
- The amount of support provided following the event
- The intensity and length of trauma
- The loss of a loved one
- Proximity to the event
- Strength of reaction
- The amount of control felt over the event
PTSD isn’t a character flaw or weakness in personality, it’s a normal reaction to a highly abnormal situation that has overwhelmed your ability to cope. Symptoms typically appear within three months of the event and the intensity of the reaction will vary from person to person. PTSD negatively impacts the ability to function in everyday situations such as work, school, home life, and interpersonal relationships.
We’re ready to explore your trauma and treat you at our center with the dignity and respect you deserve. Our trauma and PTSD team is ready to help you begin to heal.

Types of Treatment
Types of trauma & PTSD treatment offered at Lakeview Behavioral Health Hospital in Atlanta, GA
The most effective form of treatment for PTSD is a hospital that has two components: medication management and therapeutic interventions. You will design the care plan with your treatment team, always taking into account your life circumstances and the trauma you lived through.
Medications may be prescribed as an initial form of treatment to manage the symptoms of your PTSD so that you can take a more active role in your recovery. Sometimes, medication is used for a short while, until you develop more appropriate coping strategies. Others may find benefit in long-term medication management for their PTSD. This will be a decision made with you and your treatment team. In addition to medication, we have a number of therapeutic approaches we use to help you.
Individual therapy is used to discuss the traumatic event that caused the PTSD and how you’re coping with the disorder. You will discuss symptoms, relapse triggers, ways to cope with the stresses, and how to get your life back on track. You may work to create an aftercare plan to address your continuing therapeutic progress as you leave our hospital near Atlanta, Georgia.
Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is used to discuss discrepancies in the ways you think and address them. Someone with PTSD may think, “I’m never going to stop reliving those awful events,” to which the therapist will respond, “I am learning ways to cope with flashbacks of the event.” This can help change the mood and behavior of someone suffering PTSD.
Strengths-based counseling is used to help empower you to take charge of your recovery. We believe that you come to us with strengths you may not be aware of and together, we will explore these strengths in order to build off of them to promote continued recovery.
Group therapy is especially important for people who have PTSD as they may feel very isolated in their problems. Process-based groups are centered on a theme such as flashbacks or coping mechanisms and allow you to connect with others who have experienced similar challenges. Psycho-educational groups are used to teach you about your medications, relapse prevention and ways of managing stress.
We know that you’re a part of a family unit and as such we want to include your loved ones in your recovery. Family sessions will be used to educate your family about your illness, any co-occurring illnesses, and the treatments you are undergoing. In addition, we will use this time to discuss the ways in which PTSD has affected your loved ones.
In addition to traditional therapeutic interventions, we offer a wide range of experiential treatments. These include:
- Art therapy
- A.A. and N.A.
- Music therapy
- Expressive therapy
- Nutrition and wellness counseling
- Recreational therapies
Continuing Care
Continuing care and levels of treatment for trauma & PTSD
After you and your treatment team have decided that you have progressed in your recovery enough to be discharged from our hospital, you will then devise an aftercare plan to allow for your continued treatment. Some people are more comfortable transitioning to a long-term care center which allows for a similar structure to treatment at a hospital. Others opt to join either our Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) or Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP).
Still, others feel they are ready to be discharged to home, in which case we will help them locate a provider to allow for continued therapy. We will also work to connect you and your loved ones with appropriate community resources to further the healing process.
